At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
