Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of characters who will branch out from the main group to begin their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

What Defines the Combat Party

According to the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond the city, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as important members in House Halovar could help the team access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are hunted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them few options but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on October 24.
