New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
